How to improve my breathing while running?

I gave up smoking just over 6 weeks ago and have taken up a running programme. It starts of with running a minute walk 90 secs and so on and so on, it increases over the weeks. I ran the longest i have done the other night, but feel if i wasn’t struggling for breath i could have carried on. My hubby has told me to try running through it as it will pass but at the time i feel like am dying. I know it will take some time to improve my breathing after smoking but is there a way to train yourself to breath properly while running after giving up the ****.

It’s going to be hard to breathe while running for awhile because of the smoking as well as because you are starting up. Your husband is right to a certain degree in that if you run through the pain will pass, but you have to be careful and really learn your limits. If you are feeling the “burn”, then sure, keep running through it. If you are feeling pain or that you can’t breathe you need to stop and start walking. After a hard run, if I can’t breathe or catch my breath I put my arms over my head.

Sounds like you are on a pretty good plan and that you are improving. Just remember to breathe in your nose and out your mouth. Some people do well with lamaze type breathing (like: in, in, out…in, in, out…) but it doesn’t help me at all.

    I had the same issue.

Don’t try and run fast as much as run consistently. Even if you have to jog slowly, you are helping your stamina and your lungs.

Running is rhythm. Think of your body as a machine. Keep your breathing in rhythm with your strides:

    In — In — Out — Out
    Step — Step — Step — Step
