How much running do you do in basic training?

I am considering joining the army. I wanted to know how much straight running is involved? I don’t do so well running, never have, I can run pretty fast and I will always finish, but, I’m always last when it comes to long distance running. I’ve played basketball and I will run when I’m doing an activity, I just for some reason have a really difficult time breathing when straight running. Any detailed help would be great?

When you are on running days for PT in the morning the army breaks you down into ability groups based on your first PT test results.

All 4 groups run at different paces and different distances, and the goal is to bring you up into higher groups as you go through basic. Naturally you need to pass your final APFT in order to graduate basic but you should be there pretty easily.

The A ability group typically ran about 2.5-4 miles at a 6 minute mile pace, I was in the B group and we ran about a 6:45-7 minute mile pace for around 2-2.5 miles.

    Hope that helps

Depends on what you are going in as. If you are going in as Infantry 11B then you’ll do a lot of running. If you are going in as a Cook then you’ll probably do much less running.

My experience has been that the army basic and AIT wil run a person two to 3 miles and then you get to your unit and run four to six miles and ruck six miles, so basic is easy, but as someone says, depends on if your infantry or 82nd or green baray or just plain have another job, I was a printer in psyops and our 1SGT or commanders were always crazy about making us run far and then makign us stand all day long in the hot sun int he motorpool.
