Keep trying. Also, try biking. I know it sounds strange, but bicycling at a very fast pace (time yourself as you would when you run), actually builds your leg muscle and should shorten your running time. My husband did that when he needed to knock time off his long distance running time. Worked great for him. Keep at it!

it will probably just take time. take your ipod or mp3 player with you when you go running and just pace yourself. if you try to sprint, it will just hurt you as you go on because you will be too tired to finish. just run at a normal pace and then if you feel comfortable start going a little faster. hoe it works out for you!!

Do leg exercises (squat, dead lift, straight leg dead lift, power clean, calf raises) and try running up and down stairs (a high school football stadium is preferred). And yeah, bring some music with you to make the time fly by.

How long have you been training? it takes time to get your body back into condition. If you have not run for 10 years it could take up to 2 years to become conditioned again. If you have been running then you need to stress yourself. You are running at your comfort level and need to run harder. Are you only running the 1 1/2 mile distance? You should be running farther. If you want to run the 1 1/2 mile in a certain time then run 3 miles 2 to 3 days per week. Run at a comfortable pace. The other days run faster and a shorter distance. You can run tempo and fartlek days. Run hard and jog to recover and then run hard again. Break it down into timed intervals. Run fast for 2 minutes, jog for 2 minutes and then run hard again. Change the time intervals and the recovery times. After you have run to warm up then run these hard days for the distance you are running that day. After the work out run easy for 8 minutes and stretch. Drink plenty of fluids, eat well, not junk food. Your body will feel the difference very soon.
