What is the best way to start a running routine outside?
April 16th, 2009 | by DistanceRunner |I love working out but I **** running. I want to be able to run 5-10 miles 3 times a week. I can swim forever, bike forever, walk forever but when it comes to running I always want to quit, mostly because I can’t run very far without feeling uncomfortable..help! I want to love running!

So much of running is a mental battle. I ran cross country in high school and I run a few times a week now and the one thing that helps me the most is upbeat music. If I didn’t have my Ipod with good music, there’s no way I’d be able to keep going.

It IS a huge mental battle. I run distance too. I suggest starting nice and easy. maybe 1/2 a mile. Then, when that gets easier, move to 1 mile.

The secret to long distance running is not to try to run to much to soon. You have to gage yourself to how your body is feeling and developing to your training. If you have one day a week that you run just a little bit further thatn the other days that will help with improvement. Distance training is a long road of endless mental toughning. You got to tell yourself that it gets easier if you keep doing it, it just takes time and patience. Good Luck

You may want to participate in some local races. That will help you meet others in the running crowd. Running with others also seemed to help me push myself harder. I like running long runs at night as I tend to zone out more and just relax.
