January 31st, 2009 | by DistanceRunner |So I usually run like 40 minutes a day and im usually not even that tired by then. Today though i was running and at 20 minutes i got like chest pains and was a bit hard to breathe. I dont understand why this happened if i could run consistently at 40 mins

try searching mercola.com for anything that might inhibit your heath from being it’s best. If there have been any lifestyle changes, you should try searching it up.

how old are you? are you on any Rx meds.. it could have been signs of congestive heart disease… anytime you have chest pains you always want to get it checked out

Hi,
I sometimes experience a similar problem when I run. I am currently training for the New York marathon and I have found that when I run for shorter periods of time (i.e. 20 minutes) my body does not adapt as well as for the longer 1 hour sessions. Part of it is because subconsciously I am trying a little bit harder in the shorter sessions and my body and heart are not used to being pushed. Even a tiny increase in pace will put a bigger strain on the body. Also, as daft as this might seem, from a mind over matter perspective, your mind also adapts to running at a certain speed and time. Adjusting your running pace can sometimes throw off your concentration and open the door to more aches and pains. Just my two cents
If you want to keep on eye on how I am doing in my training for the New York Marathon (I will be adding tips and other advice along the way) drop in to my training blog at
Cheers & good luck

This happens to me a lot. Like someone already said, it could be because you might be going a faster pace for the shorter time.
Also there are a number of other things that I find affect me. One, did you not drink enough water that day? Two, did you eat too much food, or a different kind that maybe your body is not used to? Three, are you really stressed or tired? Four, is the weather drastically different? Any of those things mess with my body and give me things like chest pain and difficulty breathing during a run.
Or, you could just be having an off day.
