How to tell if certain sneakers are good for running?
January 22nd, 2009 | by DistanceRunner |….. asked:
I shop at discount stores so they have wider selections of shoes than department stores, but when buying sneakers how do I know if they would be good for running? And how to buy good running sneakers (after I find out they’re for running)? Don’t say ask the sales person because it’s a discount store and they’re high schoolers so don’t know more than me. Thanks.

I got my running sneakers at Famous Footwear. You can ask a sales represenative where the “running sneaker” section is located. For my sneakers, they are Nike’s and say “WOMEN’S RUNNING” on the inside sole. Just keep looking around! Some great brands are… Nike, New Balance, Adidas, etc. Good luck sweetheart!

good thing to do is to try them out and run around them in a place of the store where no one is watching.

Hmmm I would say look for shoes that have lots of padding coz with out it all the impact from running could lead 2 long term problems on ur joints etc…=P

Nike Asics and Saucony are the best, all others are crap.
it must be called a running shoe, and with running shoes, price is almost always comporable to value. If a shoe is $40, its crap, $60 okay. $80 good etc

If you want a good running shoe you need to get fitted at a specialty running store by a professional. Department stores and discount store employees rarely have the knowledge on how to fit you for a running shoe like you need to be.
A proper fitting will include a gait analysis while you run to determine how you pronate…and then based on this information, fit you with the right stability/neutral/etc. type of shoe.
If you don’t want to spend a lot of money…go get fitted, find the name/model/size of shoe you need and search for it online.
If you get the wrong shoe, you risk experiencing pain and even potential injury, when you run. With running, the shoes really are your big (and theoretically, only necessary) investment. You wouldn’t play football without buying the right protective padding, would you? Why should you go running without the right, protective footware?

You could always just visit a running store, get fitted, and then purchase either online or at your discount store. I do this quite often and purchase at Zappos for great prices and free shipping.
I highly recommend JackRabbit sports if you have one where you live. They watch you run on a treadmill when they fit you for shoes.
It’s really, really important to be fitted at least once. You can’t pick a shoe unless you understand what kind of arch support you need. If you don’t have enough support or the wrong kind of support, you could end up with serious knee problems or IT band problems, etc.
If anything, just look at your own arches and note if they look high or flat. Then visit a running website for recommendations of different types of shoes for different types of arches.
Happy running!

I would go to a specialty running store in your town and get properly fitted, this way you will have the right shoe for your feet. Its important to wear proper footwear to prevent any injuries. If you can’t afford it, just remember what the size was, make and style number. (eg. Brooks adrendaline 8, size 6) and purchase them on Ebay, or go back to the discount store and see if they have them. I buy mine on Ebay every 4-6 months, because I run alot and need to get new shoes often. What I pay 200dollars in the store I pay 45-75dollars on Ebay.

Nothing wrong with shopping at a discount sport stores for your shoes. But you better know what you want when you go in. Best way is to go to a local running store and with the help of the friendly and knowledgeable salesperson find a couple of pairs that are suitable for you to run in.
Then go to your discount store and look for those you like. Let me stress that buying a good shoe is more important then any other piece of running gear you will buy. With of course for women a good sports bra for support. Be prepared even at the cheaper running stores to pay 90 – 150 dollars for shoes.
Depending on the distance you want to run your shoes should last 400 – 600 miles. Even at a modest 20 miles a week (approx 3 miles a day) the shoes will last 6 months if you take care of them. So for a dollar a day, skip the coffee by running shoes.
