well, if you are just starting running, i recommend the couch to 5k plan:
it gives you workouts that increase in difficulty each week, starting at the level of a beginner, and ending at the level of a 5k race runner. i would say at least use this as a guideline so you don’t under or over exersise.
also, i would recommend doing something else on the side. for example, just go running every other day to let your muscles rest, and on the days you don’t go, find another activity that will help your running: i.e., yoga, pilates, etc.

I recommend alternating between jogging and walking. Try running for 100 steps, then walking for 100 (fairly briskly though!) and so on. The change in your heart rate burns more calories, and will increase your fitness level.
Or try running up a slight incline.
