What are some ways to make yourself keep running when you get tired?
June 15th, 2008 | by DistanceRunner |I’d like to know, because if someone could give me something to think about or anything then running could be a whole lot easier when i get dog tired. Theres that little gap in running between deathly tired and numbness and being bale to run forever. What should I do in that time???
Also…this would normally be like running with my soccer team to condition so we would be all running at one pace, probably a fast jog.

I find music helps…but bear in mind its actually also good for your body to vary short busts of sprinting with walking…it gives your heart a really good work out!

imagine you are racing someone or that there is something really good waiting at the end of your run and usually that keeps me running. Hope this helps a little.

You could try a few runs with music playing and see if it helps to distract you, or detract from the extreme tiredness you feel. Whenever I’m running I find that looking on the ground instead of ahead of me helps a LOT. I don’t know if that works for you.

i run 3 miles everyday i get really tired during the secong mile. what i do to keep going and not get that tired is breath deeply also if you are running dont everstop until ur done because if you stop to walk you will get really tired and you wont be able to run anymore.

i did cross country and track&field and to tell the truth theres pretty much nothing you can mentally do to get rid of the pain after you reach that point of exhaustion…but what i recommend is to physically and mentally condition yourself prior to running…for example eating alot of pasta gives you carbohydrates which could be used as fuel to burn energy when running, also pumping iron for your legs, chest, or back is also effective. But overall running is a mental game, so its always good to read alot, playing crossword puzzles/ chess/ sudoko etc….and when doing the actual running keep your focus on something or somewhere else so you wont burn all your mental energy on what you are doing physically.
-Hope this helps!

i agree with the music part about helping yourself mentally for running. before you go out running get a song that you like with a good rythm stuck in your head. that way even if you arent allowed to wear headphones or listen to music while you run, you can still play the music in your head, it takes your mind off running at the same time if youre thinking about the music. also chew gum. itll help with breathing and rythm as well.

stare at the grass/track and get lost in it, think about what you are going to have for dinner or your plans for the weekend, having a song stuck in your head helps if you cant have real music. Focus on your breathing and stride, try not to think about the pain.

Talk with the people you are running with. Or, if your running alone than listen to music or run someplace scenic.
