How do I get my dog to stop running away when she has the chance?

She always seems to run away when she gets the chance to, she won’t come back unless she’s really tired, (it will take her a long time to get tired). She will run down the street to a busy street and will start barking at the cars. I’m scared she’ll get run over or won’t come back. It’s very hard to catch her when she’s running.

    1. Never scold her after she comes to you. I don’t know if you have ever done that or not, but it will teach her that coming to you is a bad thing, and she won’t do it next time.

    2. Take every opportunity to get her to a fenced in area where she can run herself out and get exercise.

    3. Dog training classes, and lots of rewards for good behavior.

    4. If all else fails, she may need a vet to put her on a mild tranquilizer.

First, correct however she’s getting out. Is she jumping a fence, running out the door…? Second, obedience training. Every dog should at least be taught the basics…sit, down, come and stay. Do you need advice on how? Third, can you give her more exercise? Whatever you do, don’t punish her when you catch her…you’ll only make her not want to come to you. If she gets out and won’t come to you, try sitting down and calling her or kind of jog the other way while acting excited and see if she’ll chase you…thinking you’re playing a game.

Dogs really love exploring unlike cats who like to stay on their territorry (your home)

Keep her happy and comfortable at your home by playing with her soon she will love you and won’t leave your side! :))

i know plenty of people are going to give you advice on how to stop her from running away, but i have a dog that thinks it’s the greatest thing to jet away down a busy street and not come back. i’ve had him for 5 years and still can’t get him to understand this concept of staying with me. I just don’t let him out alone, he is either on a leash or in the fenced in backyard. i truly beleive some dogs just have the urge and you just have to not let her have the oppurtunity to get away from you.
