How can I increase my running distance when I get bored and tired so easily?

I can run in sports, bike, and do the elliptical but for endurance running I just get so bored and tired. I find after about one mile I want to jump off. I have kept with it figuring that it will get easier with time but it seems to get more difficult to find the motivation to stay on. Any suggestions?

Try switching up where you run. A change in scenery can make things less boring. Get some new music for your mp3 player as well. Other than that, well, you just have to grin and bear it and build up your endurance. Distance running just isn’t a lot of fun.

To enjoy distance running, you have to go far enough to get the “runner’s high”, an endorphin rush that will make you feel great.

However, to get there you have to agonize through several rough miles. What you need to do is break through that 1 mile bubble. The first mile is often the hardest. The muscles aren’t warm, there are no endorphins flowing, and you haven’t hit a rhythm yet.

It really takes 3 miles for the endorphin rush to kick in, and somewhere along the line you will hit your stride and feel more comfortable.

It just takes some discipline to get through the rough first mile or two.

IT DOES get easier if you eat right and run enough — you need to run 4 times a week really to get your body improving with each outing. Less than that and the improvements will be very slow coming if at all.

Also, find a place to run that is geographically pleasing, and don’t run on a track. The boring nature of a track run can turn anyone off. Find a nice park — it will make a difference.

    1) run with music…

    2) run with a friend

    3) sign up for a running event so you have a goal to hit

    4) try fartleks to mix it up
