Sound of running water with out water being run in pipes?
May 24th, 2008 | by DistanceRunner |This is new. no water is being ran in the house yet in the bathrooms if your quiet you hear the sound of running water. What could cause to happen hasn’t done it self. seems to be a bit more louder. Under the house looks dry
It is not the sound of the tank filling its faint running sound 24/7.

A broken pipe can be heard even if its outside of the house. I know when my wife leaves the hose on in the front yard because I can also hear it in my bathroom pipes. Is it possible you have a leaking toilet shut them off and see what happens.

suggest you have a toilet that is not completely shutting off or a possibly a sink or shower tap passing. If it is raining out you can sometimes here the water coming down the plumbing vent in the roof

turn off your stopcock ..in the uk its normally in the kitchen then listen again…if you cant hear it …the problem will be in the house ..probably a ball valve on a toilet and the water is going though the overflows ..on modern toilets the overflow water goes into the toilet ..not an over flow pipe ..check in toilets to see if you can detect water movement ..if ok check the tanks in loft for overflow problems …however if you can still hear it then you have a broken water main …water moving in pipes can be heard over a long distance ..ring your water supplier and they will check it for you ..in most cases they will locate it

The first place to check is the toilets. Remove the tank lid, and put about 4-5 drops of food coloring in the water. DON’T FLUSH THE TOILET! Wait about 10 minutes, and check the water in the bowl. If the food coloring is in the bowl, your flapper is bad, and needs replacement. This would explain what is happening. As the water leaks out of the tank, the float mechanism drops, thus turning on the water to refill the tank. Good luck!

I have noticed this when working on a customers house quite often. If poppymans idea doesn’t reveal a problem, it could just be the sound of a neighbors drain.
I work on mobile homes and in the park I work in most often, when it is quiet, you can hear the water draining when a neighbor flushes.
