How do I stop my computer from running all these processes at startup?

I recently added a video card and the geek at Best Buy told me that I had 59 processes running at startup. How can I stop some of those from running and how do I know which ones I should leave alone?

if you’re looking for a one time/short term fix, hold the left shift key down during the entire boot process. Nothing from the startup folder will run. If you’re looking for a long term fix, you’ll need a program like Hijack This! (http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html) However, changing the registry can corrupt your operating system and force you to re-install the whole thing.. Be very careful when making these sort of changes. Hijack will allow you to look, without making any changes if you just want to see what’s running.

First: Uninstall any programs listed in “step 1″

Install Update for Windows XP (KB906569)
    Updates MSconfig

Run PCPitstop “full tests” and “running programs” in the results it will designate programs that can be disabled to improve computer performance. Run MSconfig and uncheck any program “that can be disabled to improve computer performance”

    How to use MSCONFIG

Using MSCONFIG to reduce background programs at startup

Download that programme, it;s dead easy to use and stops programmes from running at start up, I use it all the time and it’s really small.
