What are some good distance running tips?

I’m a freshman in high school and I want to do Track and Field. I’m going to try out distance running (So far I know I’m doing the 2-mile for sure. On the down side, I have asthma and sometimes have bad phlegm in my throat and cramp often while I run. Any tips for preventing/treating these problems before or during a race/run? Like I said, I love running, and would just like some overall basic tips to doing well. Thanks!

I breath smoothly and pay attention to it sometimes taking big breaths in and out. Drink a lot of WATER, and ahve fun!!!

As far as the Asthma and phlegm talk to your Doctor. Cramping can be cured by consuming more potassium. I like to eat bananas to help with that since they have a lot of potassium. Make sure you stretch well after you warm up and after your work out. Drink plenty of water too.

I would recommend starting off with the shorter of the middle distances. So the 800/1600m races would be ideal, and over time your body will adapt and get stonger. You should still be running the 3200 but you will be much better off for the future if you build up speed now and use the XC season for strength training.
Make sure you have a separate pair of middle distance track spikes for the spring, XC spikes are not designed to give and traction on the track.
    Good luck

Talk to your doctor about the asthma. I’ve known a couple of athletes with asthma, so kudos to you guys.

To avoid the phlegm, hmm.. you might wanna avoid the dairy product a bit, and drink more WATER. water is like.. the #1 thing to drink BEFORE running. AFTER running, drink gatorade, to replenish the electrolytes you lost while doing your workout. Eat potassium-enriched foods like bananas and apple juice to prevent cramps.

I hope you stay faithful to track for all of your hs school life! and you should also do cross country, because running is a all-year round sport. a couple days off running can completely throw you off and cross country can help you condition for track.
